To My Foster Mom (or Dad)

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is; you helped me to mend.
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.
And just when I thought you'd done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.
First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go.
I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know."
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!
They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.
And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I'll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.
You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine.

Note to potential adopters: Lassie and Cleo and Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and and at times badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have tolerated a lot. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another. They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate or in the basement. They're scared, depressed, and anxious. Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up. But we are the Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue, and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation, and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion. So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life—and to mend your own spirit. For Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can promise you this: a rescue dog will make you a better person.

ALL potential adopters and foster homes are screened for suitable placements of dogs. The Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue may refuse placement of a dog for any reason. By submitting this application, you give permission for Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue and its affiliates to investigate and confirm all information that you have provided. All forms become the property of Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue upon submission.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS FOR FOSTERING

  1. You must be 21 years of age or older, or have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian.
  2. You must have identification showing your current address and one form of picture I.D.
  3. You must have the consent of ALL adults living in the household.
  4. If renting, you must have your landlord’s written consent and pay a pet deposit if one is required.
  5. Your existing pets must have current vaccinations and be free from contagious illnesses. Veterinary records are extremely helpful. If our dog to be adopted states “ONLY PET,” there may not be any other pets in your household until this adopted dog is no longer there, either by death of the dog or returning the dog to Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue.
  6. If this dog is stated to be “NO CHILDREN,” this means exactly that. There may be no children in your home; or if you have visiting children, this dog MUST be kept totally separate from the children. This requirement is for the safety and well being of both the Boston Terrier and the children. If you have specific questions around this stipulation, then ask us.
  7. You must be willing and able to spend the time necessary to provide training, medical treatment, proper care, and companionship for the dog.
  8. All animals in your home must be spayed/neutered unless there are extraordinary reasons otherwise. It is your obligation to discuss this issue with us, and we will make the final decision.
  9. A component of our Adoption Contract requires that you maintain contact with us, provide us with information on the dog’s health or general condition if there is a change, and are prepared to relinquish and return the dog to Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue if you are unable or unwilling to further care for the dog personally. You may NOT sell, give, or in any way, transfer ownership of the dog to another party without the expressed consent of Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue.
  10. Dog Rescue is a money-losing proposition; and without donations, we would already be broke. Part of this understanding is that you are responsible for picking up, or otherwise making arrangements to pick up, your Boston Terrier. Please do not ask our foster parents, volunteers, or coordinators to bring your Boston Terrier to you. They are already giving greatly of their time and money.
  11. We strongly recommend that you read over Frequently Asked Questions to acquaint yourself with our expectations from and requirements of you on behalf of the Boston Terrier. There are very few Bostons (or other small breed dogs) that are suitable for small children. The vast majority are NOT suitable, and we do NOT recommend Boston Terriers for children under the age of 8-10, as a minimum, unless the circumstances are unique.

We understand that making the decision to give up your dog is a tough one. If you are unsure about making this decision, call us at 866-778-3705 (see blue paragraph below); and maybe we can help you find a way to keep him or her! For an urgent surrender, please send an email to: 1461986 @ usamobility.net providing only your name, area code with phone number, and complete physical address, with Boston Terrier Surrender in the subject line. Do not send a narrative.

Please DO NOT use the above phone number: (1) to release your Boston Terrier if you have contacted other rescue organizations because doing so creates an unnecessary duplication of efforts on the part of many volunteers, and/or (2) to apply for or inquire about available Boston Terriers, (3) to inquire about the status of an adoption application. Yes, all three of the aforementioned conditions apply to you without exception.

Please understand that the dogs we take in are prioritized. Dogs coming from a shelter, where they are in danger of being put to sleep, and unclaimed strays are given first and top priority. Next, we look at dogs who are in need of immediate health care that their owners cannot provide. We then consider other dogs. For an owner release, we often ask that people foster their dogs while we look for a permanent home for them.

If you are unable to care for your dog any longer and if we do not have an available foster home, we hope that you will contribute to the cost of boarding them. Sometimes this is not possible, and we will still take the dog; but since we are funded by donations and since the cost of rescue outweighs the contributions, we hope that you can help us out while we help you out by finding a great home for your dog.

Thank you for your cooperation.
